SporeStack Blog

RIP, Hans

I've been meaning to write this post for a while.

Several years ago, I interacted with someone working for a customer of SporeStack. We'll call him Hans.

I had felt overwhelmed with SporeStack and at times wanted to get rid of it, but he made an incredibly generous offer to help me with SporeStack. Hans had a weird sense of humor and a strage way of writing. We didn't always see eye to eye on how things should be written. But he was very talented, wrote very clean code, and pioneered some critical aspects of SporeStack.

He was able to keep an eye on things so I could take a break here and there. Though these days, SporeStack is easier to run because of him. He was really fantastic.

A while back, I didn't hear from him for a while. Completely unlike him. He had fallen and hit his head, or so he thought -- he couldn't remember. When he tried to work again, I guess his mind didn't work quite like how it used to, and it deeply frustrated him. The gaps in communication became very concerning. When he was able to finally communicate again, he realized he wasn't able to keep working on SporeStack. He said that he was going to distance himself from technology for a while to find some peace. I can completely relate to that.

I don't really know what's going on these days, if he's okay or not. But I miss working with Hans. It's sad to use and read scripts that he wrote, not knowing what's become of him. All I can hope that he's well, hopefully so well that he needn't use technology any longer. Maybe he's innawoods, in a hammock somewhere.

For all I know though, R.I.P., Hans.
